Committee of Recommendation

 

The Committee of Recommendation fully supports the VSV Symposium ‘Rescaling Limits: Exploring Spacecraft Sizing’, and helps the space department with their knowledge of the Aerospace industry. This year, the following members have taken place in the Committee:

 

Prof. ir. Karel Wakker

Former Rector Magnificus at TU Delft, former Director at SRON

Prof. ir. Karel Wakker has studied Aerospace Engineering at the TU Delft, where he has been working afterwards. After teaching for several years, he became Rector Magnificus in 1993. When he retired from this function in 2002, he became director of the STRON Netherlands Institute of Space Research, where he stayed until he retired. In this period, he has kept on teaching at the TU Delft, which he still does as a guest lecturer.

 

 

 Prof. dipl.-ing. Heinz Stoewer

Former Head of ESA’s Systems Engineering and Programmatics Department

Prof. Dipl.-Ing H. Stoewer is former Head of ESA’s Systems Engineering and Programmatics Department and Managing Director German Space Agency. President/CEO of Space Associates GmbH, Member of the Corporate Board of the OHB SE, Advisor Systems Engineering Airbus Defense and Space, Past-President of the International Council on Systems Engineering (INCOSE), Distinguished Visiting Scientist NASA JPL

 

 

Bart ReijnenIr. Bart Reijnen

CEO of the Satair Group

Ir. Bart Reijnen graduated on 1995 at the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at the TU Delft. From 1995 to 2005 Reijnen worked on various locations within EADS (European Aeronautics Defense & Space Company) in Germany and France. At Airbus, he was responsible for the Project Management Office of the A380 (then called A3XX) megaliner project and at the EADS Head Office in Munich, he was Chief of Staff of the Chief Executive Officer. Since the acquisition of Dutch Space by EADS Astrium in 2006, Reijnen is CEO of the Leiden-based company. With 220 employees it is the largest space company in the Netherlands. From February 2013 till November 2016 Ir. Reijnen was Site Director and Head of Orbital Systems and Space Exploration at Airbus Defense & Space Bremen, the former EADS Astrium. From November 2016 Ir. Reijnen is CEO of the Satair Group in Copenhagen, Denmark. Also, Reijnen was chairman of SpaceNed, the association for Dutch Space companies. Furthermore, he is member of various advisory boards within the Aerospace sector. He also is a member of honour of the NVR.

 

 

Mr. Anne Cor Groeneveld

Former chairman at Dutch Aviation Group

Mr. Anne Cor Groeneveld has been involved in aerospace his whole career. Starting as an instructor at the National Dutch Flying School, he became a pilot for Transavia, where he has had many functions, such as Vice-President External Affairs. He is the founder and former chairman of the Dutch Aviation Group, pioneering an important network for Dutch Aerospace sector. Anne Cor has chaired two VSV symposia and was installed as a Member of Honour in 2016.

 

 

 

Dr. Franco Ongaro

Head of ESTEC

Franco Ongaro currently is the Director of Technology, Engineering and Quality (D/TEC), and Head of ESTEC in Noordwijk. After graduating as a Doctor of Aeronautical Engineering at the University Politecnico of Milan he joined ESA at the ESA headquarters in Paris in 1987. One year later, 1988, he moved to ESTEC to start working as Head of the Columbus Payload Interfaces Unit. He was shortlisted as candidate in the European astronaut selection of 1991. In 2005 he became head of the ESA Advanced Concepts and Technology Planning Department, issuing the first ESA Technology Long Term Plan and creating the Advanced Concepts Team. From 1994 till 2009 he taught a graduate course in spacecraft design at the University Politecnico of Milan. On April first 2011 he became Director of Technical and Quality Management at ESTEC in Noordwijk and, since the start of 2017, Director of Technology, Engineering and Quality.

 

 

Drs. Arnoud de Jong

CEO Airbus D&S

Arnoud de Jong currently is the CEO of Airbus Defence and Space in the Netherlands. After graduating from the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen in 1993, he started working as a manager at Coopers & Lybrand. Five years later he started working at Airbus Group in Paris in the Mergers and Acquisitions department. In 2003 he became Head of Office Defence and Security in Germany which he stayed for two years. From 2005 till 2007 he was VP Technology & Strategy Military Aircraft. After this he worked as VP Training and Flight Operations Services for 6 years. In February 2013 he was promoted to his current job, CEO of Airbus Defence and Space Netherlands.

 


Dr. Gerard Blaauw

Chairman of the Netherlands Space Society

Gerard Blaauw is an alumnus of TU Delft, having obtained a PhD in Mechanical Engineering in 1984. Since his time as a student, Gerard has accomplished a lot. Currently, he is Chairman of the Netherlands Space Society and director/owner of Blaauw Space Affairs. The Netherlands Space Society plays a large role in the Dutch space industry, acting as a network to connect professionals, students, and enthusiasts. Because of what this invaluable society has meant to the VSV, we are glad to have its chairman, Gerard Blaauw, as a member of our Committee of Recommendation.

 

 

 

Prof. Henri Werij

Dean of the Aerospace Engineering Faculty of the TU Delft

Henri Werij is the current dean of the faculty of Aerospace Engineering. After graduating cum laude
with a Ph.D. from Leiden University, he started working as a researcher at the Joint Institute for
Laboratory Astrophysics (JILA) and the University of Amsterdam. Since 1993, he has worked at TNO,
rising to the position of Director of Space and Scientific Instrumentation. On June 1 2017, he left his
position at TNO to succeed Hester Bijl as the dean of the faculty of Aerospace Engineering. In
addition to this, Henri Werij is a member of several scientific advisory food as well as a board
member of the Dutch association of space companies SpaceNed.

 

 

Prof. Eberhard Gill

Director of TU Delft Space Institute

Eberhard Gill holds the chair of the Space Systems Engineering department of the TU Delft, and is the director of the TU Delft Space Institute. Having studied Theoretical Astrophysics at the University of Tübingen, Professor Gill completed his master studies in Space Engineering at the TU Delft. After graduating, he worked as a researcher at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) for 17 years. In 2007 he became a professor at the TU Delft, and in 2013 he became the head of the Space Engineering department. Additionally, Eberhard Gill is a board member of the Netherlands Institute for Space Research (SRON) and a full member of the International Academy of Astronautics (IAA).

 

 

Prof. Pieter Visser

Chairholder of the Astrodynamics and Space Missions chair at the TU Delft

As chairholder of the Astrodynamics and Space Missions chair at the TU Delft, Professor Visser is
highly involved in both the research and education side of astronautics. Having been obsessed with
space travel since being a boy, Pieter Visser went on to obtain a Ph.D. in Space Engineering at the TU
Delft in 1992. After this, he held several positions, among which being a visiting scientist at the
Centre for Space Research of the University of Texas. Aside from being a full member of the
International Academy of Astronautics (IAA), he has significant expertise in the areas of precise orbit
calculations of satellites and applications of satellite remote and Doppler measurements.

 

 

Prof. Vincenzo Giorgio

CEO of ALTEC S.p.A.

Vincenzo Giorgio is an Electronics graduate of Naples University Frederico II. He has been Vice President for Science and Exploration of Thales Alenia Space Italia participating to important European in flight projects like GOCE, Herschel & Plank and of ongoing projects like: BepiColombo targeting Mercury, Solar Orbiter and Exomars mission for the Robotic Exploration of the red planet. He has been responsible within former AERITALIA of science projects like Hipparcos and Integral, working as well for the International Space Station. Currently Vincenzo Giorgo is now Vice President for Institutional Marketing & Sales at Thales Alenia Space Italia and CEO of ALTEC S.p.A.
